Past Volunteer Projects

ROC members, local clubs and organizations have provided countless hours of volunteer work on our public lands.  Below is a partial list of the projects volunteers have been involved in over the past five years:

  • Trash pickup and trail maintenance at the Chappie OHV Area (BLM)
  • Snowmobile trail maintenance in all areas of the Lassen NF (brushing out, hazard tree removal)
  • Summer long traffic counts for the proposed Share the Dream Trail in the Lassen NF
  • Engineering analysis for the proposed Share the Dream Trail in the Lassen NF
  • Preparation of the nomination report and NEPA for the proposed Share the Dream Trail
  • Preparation of a regional road sign plan for backcountry byways or discovery trails
  • Garbage clean up, sign repair, trail maintenance, culvert removal and rocking stream crossings in High Lakes OHV Area in the Lassen NF
  • Brushing out cross-country ski and hiking trails in the Mineral area, Lassen NF
  • Blocking cross-country ski trails with rocks, trees, etc. to prevent motorized access
  • Reviewing and editing the Lassen NF winter recreation map
  • Preparing the Lassen’s winter recreation sign plan and researching several vendors to purchase signs
  • Posting and maintaining trail markers and recreation (locator) signs along the trails for all winter snowmobile areas, Lassen NF
  • Volunteer grooming of trails from all snowmobile trailheads on the Lassen, Plumas, and Shasta-Trinity NFs
  • Reviewing and commenting on the construction plans for two new snowmobile trailheads in the Lassen NF
  • Submitting a grant application for the construction of a warming hut at Jonesville, Lassen NF.  Then constructing the hut.
  • Constructing a new kiosk at the Swain Mountain staging area, Lassen NF
  • Installation and maintenance of safety posters at all staging areas in the Lassen NF.
  • Conducting snowmobile safety and winter survival skills training through the CA. NV. Snowmobile Association and CA. OHMVR Division.
  • Cleaning restrooms at campgrounds and trailheads
  • Cutting trees and removing rocks blocking forest roads
  • Blocking cross-country travel to eliminate unauthorized OHV routes
  • Removing appliances, household trash, and litter from forest land
  • Reviewing and editing the Lassen Backcountry Byway interpretive driving guide
  • Partnering with the Plumas NF to designate a discovery trail (or backcountry byway)
  • Riding with FS employees to look at potential backcountry byway and discovery trail routes, and securing support for the project from elected officials
  • Working on the route designation process on the national forests in the north state
  • Submitting letters of support for grant applications for projects on the Lassen, Plumas and Shasta-Trinity NFs
  • Lobbying for State grant funds for forest recreation projects and law enforcement efforts
  • Securing positions on two county Resource Advisory Committees to promote forest health and facility improvements in a variety of recreation sites
  • Working with forest watershed teams to protect resources
  • Attending numerous meetings and field reviews with FS staff to coordinate projects and volunteer work
